Free boiler grant if you get Child Benefit

The income limit

Ofgem sets income caps for Child Benefit claimants. They are higher for couples than for single parents, and rise with each child. Income here means the household's gross income before tax.

If you are close to the limit, check anyway: the adviser confirms the current figures with you and which income counts.

A note on tax credits

Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit closed in April 2025, and most claimants were moved to Universal Credit. If you used to get tax credits, you almost certainly now receive Universal Credit, which qualifies in its own right. See our Universal Credit page or simply run the check.

The other conditions

• EPC rating D, E, F or G if you own your home, E, F or G if you rent from a private landlord. We look it up for you.
• You own the home, or you rent privately and your landlord agrees to the work with a short consent form.

What the grant can cover

• Boiler replacement where the current boiler is old and inefficient.
• First-time central heating for homes that have never had a system.
• Loft or cavity wall insulation where there is little or none.

ECO4 requires D and E homes to reach band C and F and G homes to reach band D, so insulation is often fitted alongside heating.

Cost

For most eligible families the equipment and installation are fully funded and nothing is repaid. Energy companies decide funding levels for each home and, in some cases, a contribution can be requested. We tell you before any survey if that applies.

How it works

2. An adviser calls to confirm details and book a free survey around school runs and work.
3. Survey, approval, installation by certified installers. Most jobs take one to two days, and the whole process typically takes two to four weeks from enquiry to installation.
